Journalist – BBC North East & Cumbria

We are looking for a driven and passionate journalist who wants to help reach new audiences with the news that matters to them. You’ll be a digital journalist who knows what online audiences expect and know how to turn around clean copy under tight deadlines. We are looking for a journalist who enjoys working in a busy news environment and on a range of content from breaking news, court stories, human-interest stories, features and with an ability to produce a steady stream of original content.

Role Responsibility

The Main Responsibilities For This Role Include

• Producing news content for the BBC website and social media accounts for the North East & Cumbria
• Responsible for originating and producing stories for the BBC website which can also be used on other outlets
• Coming up with original journalism to help us represent the many different sides of life in the North East & Cumbria
• To use different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve
• Use social and video to help your journalism travel further either on your own or working with our video specialists
• Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards
• Working on a rota with the rest of the team which includes early, late and weekend working

Are you the right candidate?

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria;

• Able to write clean, accurate and concise copy, sometimes to tight deadlines, for publication on the BBC website
• Good news judgement with ability to get to the heart of a story and explain it simply to the audience
• Be familiar with social media in a news context and know how to make the most of various platforms to reach a range of audiences
• Understanding of SEO within a news context to help our stories reach the people most interested in and impacted by them
• Able to do basic photo editing on software such as Photoshop Elements
• Able to produce a steady stream of original journalism ideas for news stories and features

Job share can be considered if we have two candidates who want to do so (we have no one in the team currently looking for such an arrangement).

Contract: Permanent

Location: Carlisle

You are eligible to apply for an internal role if you are either on a BBC Continuing (Permanent) contract, a BBC Fixed Term contract, a casual contract or freelance contract and you have worked continuously for 6 months.

Only internal staff are eligible to apply for the role on an attachment basis. You need to be on a continuing (permanent) or fixed-term contract.
