Job purpose

The Africa Department Programme Manager is responsible for managing processes and projects to support the design and delivery of effective and sustainable peacebuilding and conflict resolution work within the Africa department. The post will specifically play a lead role in managing and coordinating the Africa Department management team, ensuring the development and smooth implementation of departmental and wider organisational systems and processes including management of cross-department projects, fundraising and programme development, partnerships and risks management. The post holder will also be responsible for liaison between the Africa department and other departments of Conciliation Resources in collaboration with the department Operations and Compliance Manager, acts as a resource to programme teams, and manages the Africa Department Programme management team.

Person specification Essential knowledge, skills and experience

  • Understanding of and interest in peacebuilding and conflict transformation processes, preferably in the areas of focus for the Africa Department.
  • Strong organisational skills including team management, effective line management and working across departments and units to ensure adequate and timely delivery of work.
  • Significant experience in programme and grants management including development and fundraising, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and learning, and donor reporting.
  • Demonstrable experience of preparing, managing and monitoring programmatic or departmental budgets.
  • Experience of securing new funds, including developing new project ideas, building relationships with donors and writing proposals and budgets.
  • Experience of integrating gender sensitivity and a wider inclusion lens into peacebuilding initiatives and all aspects of the programming cycle, with a willingness to further develop in this area.
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment and sensitivity to communicating with multicultural and diverse audiences (including donors, senior government officials, politicians, opposition groups, national and local NGOs and conflict-affected communities).
  • Experience remotely supporting partners on the successful joint delivery of work
  • Appreciation of confidentiality, political sensitivity and the complexities of working in a situation of unresolved conflict or political transition.
  • Experience of working in a conflict-affected area, and experience of hostile environment training or willingness to undertake hostile environment training.
  • Initiative, enthusiasm and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Excellent spoken and written English and French.
  • Willingness to undertake regular international travels.

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience

  • Experience working in an Apple Mac environment and excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software packages, databases, email, internet
  • Experience in developing risk assessments in relation to security and safeguarding.
  • Experience supporting financial management including experience preparing budgets, monitoring organisational and partner expenditure and supporting financial reporting.
