The position is located in the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC), which was established as part of the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports (the “Black Sea Grain Initiative” or BSGI), signed by the Russian Federation, Türkiye, Ukraine on 22 July 2022, to facilitate safe navigation for the export of grain and related foodstuffs and fertilizers from designated Ukrainian ports. The United Nations signed the BSGI as a witness, and the Parties request the assistance of the Secretary-General in its implementation, in furtherance of the humanitarian mission of the United Nations and subject to its authorities and mandates.
This temporary job opening is being advertised for the position of Associate Political Affairs Officer/Special Assistant, based in Istanbul, Türkiye. The incumbent reports directly to the ASG/UN Coordinator.
Responsibilities
Within the limits of delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer/Special Assistant will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
• Provides day-to-day support to the ASG in implementing the Initiative, including keeping the ASG informed on all matters requiring his personal attention, gathering, selecting, and analyzing information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
• Assists the ASG in organizing and preparing meetings and events, drafts summaries and other official correspondences for the ASG’s signature and assists with simultaneous interpretations and/or translation of official documents from Russian to English or vice versa, when/as required basis.
• Assists in coordination and drafting summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes, notes to the file, code cables, and inputs for the ASG’s reports, as required.
• Maintains collaborative relationships with the JCC Secretariat and all its components, a broader UN family, donors, and other national and international partners on coordination and policy matters.
• Keeps abreast of the latest trends and political developments and emerging issues with respect to the implementation of the Initiative and provides inputs on issues to the ASG and his senior leadership team members, as appropriate.
• Assists the ASG in coordinating planning and budgetary processes, recruitments, and other administrative and operational management and related deliverables and arrangements.
• Performs other relevant duties as requested by the ASG.
Competencies

Ability to advise on communications challenges, assess communications environments, develop communications strategies, and manage implementation of communications campaigns in Yemen with various promotional techniques. Ability to make decisions with an eye to the impact on others and on the Organization and to apply rules, regulations, policies and guidelines in work situations. Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an addition two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job – Specific Qualification
Relevant training in planning, facilitation and/or coordination is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, diplomacy, intergovernmental processes, multilateral negotiation, or related field is required.
Experience in outreach, facilitation, analyses, advice and reporting is required.
Experience working in or in support of operations of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization and nongovernmental organization is desirable.
Previous experience working in the office of a senior UN official as a Special and/or Administrative Assistant is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English and Russian (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
• This is a project-funded post. The initial appointment is for a period of two (2) months with the possibility of extension.
• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
