Communication Manager, Environmental Health
Location – Jakarta, Indonesia

Vital Strategies, based in New York City, is an international public health organization. We develop and oversee programs to strengthen public health systems and address leading causes of morbidity and mortality, providing expertise in project implementation and management, strategic communications, epidemiology and surveillance, and other core public health capacities. Our specific programs include road safety, obesity prevention, tobacco control, and activities to strengthen public health data systems and the use of public health data to guide policy and decision-making. The Position
The consultancy is located in Jakarta, Indonesia, supporting our strategic communications work in Environmental Health. We are seeking an experienced communications professional to plan and implement communication activities to support our programs on air pollution, climate and children’s environmental health. The ideal candidate will be conversant with various media channels, including traditional mass media, social and digital media, and earned media strategies. The position will also work closely with Vital Strategies’ global policy, advocacy and communications (PAC) team, comprised of over 50 people from varying backgrounds, including research, social marketing, public relations, and public health. We expect that the consultant will work, on average, 40 hours weekly.
Duties
- Develop and implement communications outputs including social media campaigns, website promotion, database management, communications training, agency/vendor management and public relations.
- Author and edit press releases, op-eds, statements, blogs, and case studies tailored to specific audiences and channels.
- Build and maintain relationships with civil society organizations and other stakeholders involved with environmental health work.
- Represent Vital Strategies with partners and stakeholders.
- Prepare reports, presentations, correspondence, meeting agendas as needed.
- Organize events involving media, government, and other related stakeholders
- Participate in media training sessions, and programs that train journalists on environmental health.
- Supervise campaign strategies including the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) study, developing campaign materials, and engage with related stakeholders.
- Contribute strategically to the development of environmental health work in Indonesia and the region.
Qualities and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in public or media relations, journalism, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of communications experience
- Prior working experience with international non-governmental organizations and the Indonesian government is an advantage
- Knowledge of media and campaign landscape in Indonesia and ASEAN
- Excellent writer and editor with great attention to detail.
- Strong media relations experience with ability to think creatively and generate new story angles.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Ability to bring new creative ideas to communicate the organization’s work and grow audiences and reach.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to successfully manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Experience in organizing events and conducting KAP research is highly desirable
- Interest in public health and/or environmental issues
- Fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and English
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Consistent and reliable internet access
