
Congregation Bonai Shalom
The Bonai Shalom kitchen is a kosher, nut-free, dairy kitchen that cultivates nourishment through delicious healthy food and vibrant community engagement. We strive to use organic, local and sustainable ingredients for our meals and to cook from scratch using whole foods. Whenever possible we offer gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options at all meals.
We are seeking a kitchen manager who is excited and enthusiastic about using organic, local and sustainable ingredients while maintaining kashrut standards and working within the organizational budget. This entails building relationships with local suppliers such as farmers, bulk food suppliers, and artisanal producers, and developing systems to get the most out of ingredient purchases and minimize waste.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining food safety standards and ensuring all kitchen users follow standards.
- Maintaining kashrut standards. This includes ensuring all items that come into the kitchen have the proper heckscher labels. Kashering kitchen items as needed. Kashering the kitchen for Passover.
- Maintaining an electronic kitchen calendar that includes all events where food is served, preparation times, and use of the kitchen by others, including volunteers and caterers.
- Coordinating and supervising staff and volunteers as needed.
- Preparing and serving 3 Friday night dinners per month, kiddush lunch on Saturdays, and meals for various programs. Creating and printing menus and labeling all items (GF, DF, Vegan, etc.) Setting up and cleaning up the social hall and/or outdoor area for meals.Washing linens and kitchen dish towels and other items.
- Coordinating catering for specific programs and holidays.
- Developing menus for all meals
- Working with the chair of the congregation’s hospitality committee.
- Procuring ingredients through various channels and prioritizing kosher, organic, local and sustainable ingredients. Establishing accounts with purveyors as needed
- Ensuring purchases and catering costs remain within budget. Tracking the budget and working with the Executive Director as needed to make adjustments.
- Maintaining an inventory of kitchen supplies and staples and ordering as needed.
- Maintaining and organizing the kitchen on a weekly basis. This includes cleaning the fridge weekly. Labeling all food that is saved and determining what food needs to be frozen for later use.
- Managing trash, compost, and recycling: The kitchen manager is at the heart of executing our zero-waste policies, including working with the farm across the street to compost our food scraps hyper-locally.
- Preparing ritual items for meals as needed.
- Ordering and preparing snacks for religious school.
- Coordinating special projects in the kitchen including holiday baking. This may include coordinating volunteers.
Experience
- Experience with kashrut preferred
- Food safety certification or equivalent knowledge and experience
- A strong base of culinary knowledge, preferably whole-foods and scratch cooking
- Experience purchasing local, organic and sustainable food and wholesale sourcing
- Experience cooking for 50 – 100 people per meal.
- Experience working with caterers and managing contractors
- Experience baking gluten-free and dairy-free desserts or willingness to learn
- Experience with catering large events of up to 300 people, setting up and cleaning up.
- Experience with inventory management
- Physical stamina to withstand a full shift potentially on their feet.
- Strong communication skills
This is a part time hourly W2 position and averages 20 hours per week. The salary is $22-25/hr.
