Program description
KAICIID and MiCT have partnered in creating a Dialogue Journalism Fellowship program in support of journalism and media in the Arab region that aspire to promote journalism ethical standards with regard to reporting on religious and ethnic groups, as a mean to foster new inter- community dialogue, and promote peace and sustainable development.
The Dialogue Journalism Fellowship is designed to be a lasting resource for journalists to reinforce and advance their participation in peacebuilding and preventing violence and countering hate speech. This program has a focus on four elements; (i) The conflict dynamics of the region, (ii) the role of religion in promoting peace; (iii) the positionality of the journalist’s identity in their reporting and; (iv) journalists’ contributions in the field of peacebuilding.
This program prioritises the core values of journalism in practice through promoting independence, accuracy, fairness and balance, as well as respect for diversity, ethnicity and religion as inscribed in national and international codes of ethics.
The Fellowship Programme pursues the following objectives:
● Boosting the role of journalists in policy advocacy and awareness raising against hate speech resulting from conflicts and the misuse of religion in the Arab region.
● Linking journalists from different faith backgrounds and policy makers across the region, as well as and with other regional and international actors to strengthen their contribution to the peace reporting at the local and national levels.
● Increasing commitment and capacities of journalists from Arab countries to promote pluralism, diversity, peaceful coexistence, ethical standards of journalism and counter hate speech.
● Enhancing the engagement of trained journalists in conducting and producing content for the project’s media outlets to break stereotyping, with a specific focus on countering the misuse of media for spreading hatred.
● Small-grant programme – each fellow will receive 2,000EUR to produce/create journalistic material that represents this project and supports the training in the workshops. The lead trainer will coordinate and support in this mentoring activity.
A first workshop has already been implemented in Tunis, in February 2022. We hope the lead trainer will build off this initial kick-off and carry-out the mentoring for the small-grant programme with the fellows as well as the two next workshops. We hope for the next workshop to take place in May 2022.
