NRC

We are seeking one Roving Energy Expert, Electric to be based in Kenya, Roving within East Africa Region for a period of 7 months with the possibility of extension, and one Energy Expert to join the Roster.

The Experts must have the right to work in either one of these countries: Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Mozambique and Yemen.

The Experts must be willing to travel to the East African & Yemen countries, including remote and conflict-affected areas.

Travels require: 70% of time deployed, the Expert shall be in country-based missions for (1 min – 3 max) months.

This is an English-speaking role and to be eligible to apply, you must be fluent in English (written and verbal) and have an advanced University degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent) in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Sustainable Development studies, Economics, Business, administration, environmental management, energy technology, or other related fields.

You must also have a minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience in a private sector EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) and/or Energy Provider, Management Consulting or Auditor/Consulting firm; Investment firm or social enterprise with Energy/Infrastructure focus; or UN/Humanitarian/Development Agency working directly on Operationalising Renewable Energy transitions. High-level coordination experience is essential.

Duties and responsibilities

The Regional Roving Energy Expert will support the development of targeted action plans to reduce emissions from some of NRC’s highest emitting locations in the East Africa and Yemen Region. The key activities of the Experts will be:

  • To assess and quality checks the data provided by the NRC Carbon Monitoring Coordinator and give feedback if adjustments are needed.
  • To do an energy assessment based on data provided and observations at the sites.
  • Do a market analysis of the possible clean energy alternatives in the area.
  • Do a cost/benefit analysis based on the data, assessment, and market analysis to provide a plan for the NRC office(s) on how to transition to clean energy at the given site/facility. The analysis should provide NRC with what is needed to go to the implementation phase after the expert leaves.
  • To provide training to NRC staff where needed, on how to make cost-efficient decisions and enable the staff to move forward with the implementation of clean energy solutions.
  • To assess the impact, challenges, and opportunities of clean energy solutions for ICT.
  • To support the country office if required in the development of environmental strategies, identification of HR needs and recruitment, and the development of standard operating procedures, SOPs.

Qualifications and experience

  • An advanced university degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Sustainable Development Studies, Economics, Business Administration, Environmental Management, Energy Technology, or relevant fields.
  • A minimum of six years of relevant professional experience in a private sector EPC and/or Energy provider, Management Consulting or Auditor/Consulting firm; investment firm or social enterprise with Energy/Infrastructure focus; or UN/Humanitarian/Development agency working directly on operationalising renewable Energy transitions.
  • High-level coordination experience is essential.

Essential requirements

  • *A demonstrated experience in the design and application of Electrical Energy solutions, especially renewable solutions.*
  • *Experience in the planning, design, budgeting and management of Electrical Energy systems and Energy standards and audits.*
  • To have a good understanding of testing equipment and the process of test, inspection, verification, and commissioning.
  • An extensive knowledge of financial, regulatory and/or policy frameworks, renewable energy financial management.
  • To have familiarity with renewable energy business development is an asset.
  • Ability to meet reporting deadlines, manage budgets and complete quarterly and yearly reporting.
  • Fluency in English is required
