MENTOR Initiative

Position Title: Security Technical Placement

Location: Haywards Heath and remote working
Duration: 3 months
Start Date: January 2023

Reporting to: Head of Security

This technical placement supports MENTOR’s Head of Security in reducing staff exposure to risk in complex humanitarian emergencies. The successful applicant will require flexibility in tasking to support mission staff who are experiencing security-related difficulties, as well as the ability to filter data and present information on incidents and trends to senior mission staff.

Core Responsibilities:

The Technical Placement will support the Head of Security through the following core responsibilities:

Management Support:

  • Monitoring location status of staff in overseas missions through use of GPS and GSM technologies.
  • Monitoring incident data provided by third parties, and dissemination of such to relevant overseas mission staff.
  • Provision of pre-departure security briefings to staff deploying to overseas missions.
  • Monitoring pre-movement route assessments by overseas staff to ensure appropriate measures are in place to reduce exposure to risk.

Technical support:

  • Contribute knowledge and ideas of security-related activities, in order to improve services to mission staff. This can include ideas of new services to be offered, or improvements to technologies already in use.
  • Maintenance of datasets on institutional shared drive.

Written Documentation:

  • Produce and/or assist in the production of the security component of concept notes and proposals to be presented to donors.

Research:

  • Carry out any necessary desk-based research for any of the tasks detailed above.
  • Monitor insecurity in countries representing potential areas of expansion for MENTOR.

Other:

Any other duties as may be assigned to the Technical Placement by the Head of Security and/or MENTOR’s Director.

It is possible that field visits may be required at short notice. This may include visiting areas that are considered endemic to disease, highly insecure, and/or are experiencing a natural disaster. It is expected of the Technical Placement to have the flexibility to deploy within the organizational guidelines and risk analyses.

Job requirements:

-Undergraduate degree in international relations, peace studies or similar field demonstrating knowledge of security and political dynamics; or

-Undergraduate degree in logistics, engineering or similar field demonstrating some level of data analysis.

-Understanding of the humanitarian sector and humanitarian principles is beneficial.

-Familiarity of NGO working environments an advantage.

-Fluent English required, with knowledge of Spanish, French, Portuguese or Arabic required.

-Ability to work in demanding and insecure field environments.

The position is an initial 3-month role. Thereafter there is an opportunity for further placement in one of MENTOR’s field missions.
