Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project
The project:
The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.
The role:
ACLED is recruiting a Data Coordinator to assist with data management and data processing. The Data Coordinator will support the maintenance of ACLED’s existing data systems and contribute to the development of new systems. This position will oversee ACLED’s Data Literacy Officer and Data Officer and will report to the Associate Data Manager. This is a full-time, remote position and can be done from any location with reliable internet service.
The Data Coordinator will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Support the upload of ACLED data weekly (and sometimes daily) to the ACLED database and website by the Data Officer.
- Support dashboard and API management (in collaboration with the API consultant)
- Maintain a data library of sources, geo-locations for spatial data collection, and actors.
- Support the Associate Data Manager with issues and challenges related to data processing and management for the organization.
- Assist the Associate Data Manager with the building and maintenance of ACLED’s internal suite of R Shiny apps for data management and analysis.
- Engage in data preparation for analysis or bespoke projects.
- Perform regular assessments and comparisons of content within the dataset.
- Oversee the data-focused aspects of ACLED’s data literacy initiatives.
- Manage the Data Officer and Data Literacy Officer.
- Other ad hoc data management tasks.
Skills and competencies:
- Required:
- Intermediate R skills, including experience building Shiny apps and working with the tidyverse package.
- 1-2 years experience manipulating large datasets (e.g. wrangling messy data, data cleaning, preparing data for analysis, etc.)
- Fluency in English.
- Research focus or professional experience in conflict research or peacebuilding.
- Strong critical thinking and analysis skills.
- Experience working to deadlines with limited supervision.
- An extremely high level of attention to detail.
- Flexible team player, especially across a remote, global team.
- Preferred:
- Familiarity with SQL, particularly MySQL.
- Familiarity with APIs.
- Familiarity with ACLED data and methodology.
- Knowledge of spatial analysis, GIS, GIS programs and geolocation software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) and practices.
- Familiarity with Tableau.
