This position can be hired as either an Engineer I or one level higher as an Engineer II depending on experience

Description

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied

This position performs engineering studies, calculations and settings development for substation protective relays. Primary job responsibilities will be focused on the application of new protective relaying for existing infrastructure (protection upgrades) or new transmission system capital investments. Additional responsibilities include providing protective relay settings support and troubleshooting for relays and protective systems as well as the development, implementation and maintenance of protective device settings templates (transmission line protection, transformer protection, bus protection, capacitor protection, etc.).

Transmission P&C Settings projects will include 4.16 kV, 12.5 kV, 24 kV, 44 kV, 100 kV, 230 kV, and 525 kV voltage levels. The candidate will be expected to manage multiple ongoing projects and interface with other engineering disciplines, project management, and construction/maintenance crews as dictated by the work. The candidate is expected to excel in adhering to project schedule demands and finding solutions to problems collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Develops conceptual design single line logic diagrams for protection and control schemes in transmission substations.
  • Performs short circuit fault studies in ASPEN Oneline in the process of developing and coordinating relay settings.
  • Uses calculation tools to develop settings for protection relays – Electromechanical, Microprocessor (primarily SEL), etc.
  • Perform QA reviews for One Line drawing and settings deliverables produced by other members of the P&C Settings team.
  • Interface with Relay construction personnel during project construction to facilitate successful completion of construction (i.e. submit revised settings when needed, analyze settings corresponding to temporary line/station configurations as needed, etc.)
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies.
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications

Required / Basic Requirements – Engineer I

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

Required / Basic Requirements – Engineer II

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • 2 years minimum work related experience

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Ability to complete assignments within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work.
  • Familiarity of Aspen Relay Database, Aspen OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010, SEL-5030 AcSELerator software.
  • Understanding and experience with NERC Compliance Standards including but not limited to: PRC-001, PRC-006, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027, CIP-002, and FAC-008.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relaying.
  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facililty.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
