GOAL

Established in 1977, GOAL is an international humanitarian agency dedicated to alleviating the suffering of the poor and the vulnerable and is currently operating in 14 countries world-wide. GOAL delivers a wide range of humanitarian and development programmes, ranging from humanitarian relief in disaster situations to supporting the development of healthcare services and building sustainable livelihoods. Since its foundation, GOAL has allocated more than €910 million to programmes in over 60 countries.

GOAL has an annual budget of approximately €130 million and is supported by a range of donors including the Irish Government, UK Government, USAID, the European Union, individuals, trusts and foundations. GOAL identifies, develops and manages opportunities to work with others and further GOAL’s organisational objective of reducing extreme poverty and strengthening resilience through pro-active engagement with an array of global partners, such as donors (institutional and large foundations), international NGOs and commercial entities. GOAL is recruiting a Director of Business Development to drive GOAL’s Business Development strategy. **

Overview of the role

Working as a member of the senior management team, the Global Director of Funding and Business Development will lead GOAL’s global business development efforts with a primary focus on the expansion and diversification of GOAL’s Institutional Funding.

The role reports to the CFO, with monthly engagement with the CEO.

Supporting its new organisational strategy (2022 – 2025), GOAL is embarking on an ambitious funding and financing strategy that seeks to develop existing and build more strategic partnerships with bilateral and multilateral donor agencies to increase their income, influence, and programmatic impact. The successful candidate will lead a business development team who will lead the global funding strategy and support the revenue and programmatic growth across all program areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management:

o Lead the implementation of global funding strategy. **

o Lead and facilitate cross departmental teamwork on behalf of the Funding and Business Development Team.**

o Lead a team of six business development staff across UK and EU markets.**

o Work closely with the CFO to support strategic corporate initiatives.**

o Work collaboratively across the organisation with program and technical teams, country offices and other departments to identify opportunities to grow and diversify GOAL’s funding portfolio.**

o Develop relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders, particularly with government institutions, bilateral/multilateral organizations and strategic partnerships with INGOs as needed.**

o Maintain proficient knowledge of the organization’s programmes to leverage new opportunities.**

Partnerships and Networks

o Develop and manage relationships with targeted Global Strategic Partners and Alliances.**

o Promote GOAL through presentations and participation in global networks

Monitoring & Reporting

o Ensure strong systems are in place for the development and tracking of metrics in order to measure progress and inform decision-making.

o In conjunction with the Marketing Team, develop good communication and marketing materials for use with external and internal stakeholders.

o Oversee and directly manage the gathering of intelligence on strategic funding opportunities, competitors, and potential partners.

Person Specification

Essential

o Previous Experience in Business Development: The candidate should have 10 years’ experience submitting grants to the multiple donors including USAID (OFDA, FFP), BPRM, Irish Aid, EU, FCDO and other corporate/private foundations.

o Communications & Job Knowledge: The candidate needs strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write and present clearly and persuasively internally and externally on programmes and GOAL. Strong knowledge on global issues such as migration, refugees, conflict, emergency response are key.

o Technical, Analytical & problem-solving skills:

o strong research and analytic abilities, with a demonstrated ability to think strategically and have a thorough understanding of strategic programme development.

o Identify system improvements that contribute to the effectiveness of BD strategies and recommend workable solutions for challenged processes.

o solid computer skills and knowledge of database programmes and dashboard analytics.

o Leadership: Take initiative and demonstrate leadership on the positioning of the business development team and build strong relationships with departments internally and with donors externally to achieve organisational business development objectives.

o Experience managing team members remotely, with the ability to motivate and support without day-to-day interaction.

Highly Desirable

o Willingness to travel, sometimes at short notice, to major global cities and GOAL’s operational locations.

o Knowledge and experience of blended finance, impact investing, pay-for-performance mechanisms, venture philanthropy, and/or social enterprise.

o Arabic, French or Spanish language skills

o Extensive overseas management experience within humanitarian and development contexts

o Previous experience working for an institutional donor or foundation
