Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. Context:
Background Information
The Department of Peace and Development Coordination (DPDC) oversees planning, programming, research, policy, capacity building and advocacy efforts and providing policy, regulatory and operational guidance in matters related to humanitarian, development, and peace nexus, enhancing IOM’s programming and institutional capacities in both humanitarian and development contexts, incl. environment and climate change, responses in post-crisis contexts, transition and recovery programs and integrating migration into sustainable development policies and action plans. This includes working together with all IOM divisions, regional and country offices, as well as development cooperation partners and donors to strengthen capacities for ensuring that migration is leveraged for sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Compact on Migration.
The Department comprises of three Divisions, Migration, Environment, Climate Change and Risk Reduction Division (MECR), Migration and Sustainable Development Division (MSD) and Transition and Recovery Division (TRD).
Supervision
Under the direct supervision of the Director, Department of Peace and Development Coordination and in close coordination with the Heads of DPDC Divisions, the Intern will provide general planning, coordination and administrative support to the Department of Peace and Development Coordination. In particular, these include support with organization of various internal and external events and capacity development activities, including online meetings, trainings and webinars, peer exchanges, support to preparation of analytical notes, policy briefs, communication and knowledge products as well as general programme support to the projects and programmes implemented by the Department.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning and preparation for the DPDC internal meetings, by scheduling, facilitating coordination, preparing materials, liaison with colleagues from other departments and IT.
- Support planning, preparations and organization of capacity development events, workshops and trainings for IOM staff and external partners, incl. drafting talking points, agendas, presentations and other training materials and support with notetaking and follow-up after events including drafting reports and Notes for the File.
- Assist in drafting policy inputs and advice responding to internal and external IOM requests for support, incl. preparation of briefs, fact sheets and other materials in liaison with IOM’s communication department in HQ, Regional and country offices.
- Assist in preparing presentations and support the development of communications and knowledge management materials developed by the Department for internal and external communications and support operations of DPDC internal SharePoint and other internal communication platforms and tools.
- Assist on incoming/outgoing correspondence, phone calls, setting up DPDC meetings as well as handling visitors of the Department.
- Support with general administrative and coordination tasks to ensure the smooth implementation of the ongoing projects implemented by DPDC, including liaising with Country and Regional Offices, tracking the implementation of work plans and preparation of the reports on the activities implemented and as needed.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

- The Intern will gain experience working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
- Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration.
- The Intern will acquire valuable technical knowledge by helping to develop and implement social media campaigns for a prominent UN agency.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, Migration Studies, Social Science, Political Science, International Relations, Anthropology, Economics, Business Administration or a related field from an accredited academic institution.
Experience
- Experience consolidating and analysing materials, drafting reports, presentations, information materials, etc.;
- Practical experience of how-to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.
Skills
- Excellent writing skills, including ability to write content in a concise and clear manner;
- Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills;
- Ability to support planning, coordination and organization of workshops, trainings, awareness raising activities and other events at the regional or global levels, including direct communication with the stakeholders and partners;
- Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
- Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;
- Good level of computer literacy;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Ability to work in a quick changing environment and a high level of adaptability.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
- have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
- are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
- are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work inspecific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
- are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
