The Private Sector Partnerships Unit sits within the Donor Relations Division under the Department of External Relations. The objective of the Private Sector Partnerships Unit is to provide the Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices with assistance and expertise relating to initiating, establishing and maintaining partnerships with the private sector. The Private Sector Partnerships Unit is responsible for the development and implementation of IOM’s Private Sector Strategy which seeks to enhance how IOM works with the private sector to support safe, orderly and regular migration. The Private Sector Partnerships Unit establishes and coordinates IOM’s due diligence process, builds staff capacity in private sector partnership-building and oversees the Goodwill Ambassador programme.
The private sector engagement strategy 2023 – 2027 is an ambitious five-year plan that sets forth a proven approach based on three main pillars – impact, income and innovation. The strategy will assist IOM to enhance partnerships with the private sector to foster change in corporate values and practices; enhance protection of migrants’ rights; generate innovative technical partnerships that capitalize upon business expertise and capabilities and grow flexible funding that can support programme implementation and impact globally and advance implementation of the Global Compact for Migration.
Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Donor Relations Division, and direct supervision of the Head of Private Sector Partnerships Unit, the Private Sector Partnerships Lead (Innovation) will be responsible for private sector engagement across the Innovation pillar in accordance with the Private Sector Strategy.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Private Sector Partnerships:
- Actively identify and lead opportunities to develop innovative partnerships with the private sector.
- Lead the initiation, outreach, scale up and expansion of corporate, foundations, HNWI, Major Donors and legacy fund raising for initiatives aimed at leveraging the expertise, skill, capacity and resources of the private sector to develop and fund innovative solutions to migration and humanitarian related challenges.
- Develop and mainstream IOM’s institutional approach to innovation through consistent mapping of project ideas and testing in consultation with Innovation and Knowledge Management Unit
- Identify private sector engagement opportunities for global outreach. Support the development of a mapping on innovation and private sector engagement.
- Contribute to the establishment of an external private sector advisory Group.
- Coordinate with national committees to develop partnerships with the private sector.
Capacity Building:
- Coach and build the capacities of IOM staff and PSP Peer Support Group on aspects of innovative private sector partnerships by providing advice, guidance and training to ensure consistent, outreach activities that deliver the desired impact.
- In coordination with the PSP team, plan and support global capacity-building initiatives through online and in-person trainings and workshops.
- Contribute to the setup of communities of practice and tools for collaboration and knowledge management for private sector partnerships across IOM.
- Identify and propose opportunities for knowledge exchanges in the areas and geographies assigned – for IOM Staff to learn about best practices and success stories on private sector engagement from IOM staff in other regions.
Coordination, Management and M&E:
- Monitoring and reporting upon progress against KPIs for pipeline under direct responsibility as outlined in the Private Sector Strategy.
- Work with PSP Team as appropriate, to compile and draft narrative and financial reports to private sector donors as it relates to activities led by the Unit.
- Contribute to the development of reporting mechanisms to enable timely impact reporting to Member States, private sector partners and the public to enhance accountability.
- Perform other duties as required for the successful implementation of the Private Sector Strategy.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations, Management, Development Studies, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or,
- University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
- Excellent understanding of private sector priorities and gained experience in developing multi-stakeholder partnerships;
- Experience in handling Corporate Social Responsibility programs and corporate recognition programs;
- Significant experience in exploring new private sector opportunities and providing inputs to design and develop solutions with prospective partners;
- Experience building long-term partner relationships and understands the value of expanding relationships across geographies and is comfortable engaging with multiple sectors;
- Experienced in working cross-functionally and obtaining relevant content and information from different units to build innovative partnerships with private sector; and,
- At least five years of experience in private sector partnership building with proven success in mobilizing financial resources from corporations and philanthropic foundations.
Skills
- Strong influencing skills and confidence to engage with high-level stakeholders;
- Proven and successful multi-year track record in private sector partnerships (fundraising) with a strong ability to meet fundraising targets and to negotiate and secure corporate and foundation partnerships for a monetary value of the one noted in the Operational Context;
- Strong ability to reconcile the needs of the Organization with those of the donor;
- Ability to write, draft, and edit, reports, acknowledgements, briefings, and donor correspondence when letters, proposals, grants, appeals and ability to explain complex issues to external donors and present the Organization and diverse operations in an appealing and concise manner;
- Ability to develop Unique Value Proposition for private sector partners; and,
- In-depth understanding of private sector partnerships, fundraising, philanthropy and UN agencies.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in
English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another IOM official language is an advantage.
