Education Cultural Mediator-National Contract

Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified professional to work in operations of DRC program in Central Greece to Epirus region as a Cultural Mediator.

About the job

Under the overall management of the Urban Manager and the overall supervision and direct management of the Education Team Leader, in close cooperation with the Senior Teacher and the teachers, the Education Cultural Mediator, will provide support to the implementation of non-formal education activities for migrant and refugee children and youth in the DRC Homework and Creative Activities Centers (HCAC) in open accommodation sites in the region on Epirus in Greece. The Education Cultural Mediator will support teachers in implementing educational and outreach activities that are high quality, age appropriate, and in line with the needs of children and youth.

Responsibilities:

Implementation and design of non-formal education activities:

  • Support teachers in the implementation of non-formal education activities for school-age children (4 to 15), youth (16-18) as per the populations’ needs
  • Collaborate with teachers to create a safe classroom environment and promote holistic student well-being
  • Support teachers in designing culturally appropriate educational activities based on age, educational level, and the individual needs of students
  • Promote empathy, compassion and respect for the gender, ethnic, religious, cultural, and learning diversity of students
  • Plan, organize and implement mother tongue language classes for school age children where possible
  • Assist in coordinating joint events with children, youth and adults from refugee and host communities, for integration purposes
  • Provide information to beneficiaries on existing education opportunities (formal and non-formal) and promote the right to education for all
  • Contribute to outreach activities and support the distribution of teaching and learning material (e.g. stationery, homework packs and school kits)
  • Provide translation/interpretation when necessary
  • Assist the education team in administrative tasks when relevant
  • Attend and participate in assigned meetings, activities, and trainings
  • Contribute to the identification of student vulnerabilities and raise protection referrals to the Social Scientist, Team Leader or Child Protection actor as needed
  • Adhere to DRC’s Code of Conduct and help to create and maintain an environment that prevents child safeguarding violations and promotes the implementation of DRC’s child Safeguarding Policy
  • Contribute to the reinforcement of existing communication with persons of concern across DRC departments
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Education Team Leader and Urban Manager relevant to the achievement of DRC Greece objectives

Representation

  • Attend and participate in assigned meetings, activities, and trainings
  • Maintain effective communication with other DRC departments and actors at site
  • Organize and deliver on-site education/parents’ meetings in the area of operation as required

Programme Development:

  • Contribute to continual improvements in DRC programming and ways of working, through identification and communication of challenges, gaps, recommendations for improvements and lessons learnt.

Accountability:

Guided by the DRC Programme Handbook, suggest relevant accountability initiatives in the field.

About you

  • At least one (1) year of professional experience in a related position is required
  • Good verbal and written English language skills is required
  • Strong verbal and written knowledge of Farsi or Arabic or French is required
  • Good computer literacy is required
  • Strong verbal and written knowledge of other languages including Dari, Pashto or Somali is considered an asset
  • Good verbal and written Greek language skills is considered an asset
  • Good verbal and written French language skills is considered an asset
  • Training or courses in NFE and/or child protection/safeguarding will be considered an asset
  • Experience in providing recreational activities to children (drama, play, games, circus, sport, storytelling, drawing/painting, arts activities, music, dancing) will be highly appreciated
  • Experience engaging with communities living in emergency reception site(s) in Greece would be a strong asset
  • Previous experience with local or international NGOs will be considered a strong advantage
  • Experience of community-based or community mobilization work in a humanitarian context is a strong advantage

  • Designation of Duty Station- Location: roving in the region of Epirus with travelling to the open accommodation sites in the area as needed (Katsikas, Agia Eleni, Filippiada sites)
